Reviews

"Clean and smooth aromas of yellow peach, honey butter, pineapple, toast and chalk show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is taut and fresh with crisp flavors of Gravenstein apple, nectarine and a pinch of vanilla."

John Sebastiano is a one of the newer plantings in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The vineyard is planted on the extreme Eastern edge of the appellation, and as such, it is in a warmer part of the AVA. Soils here are clay-loam underlain by limestone which vary greatly in depth due to the nature of the slopes and swales of the vineyard. Our Wente clone Chardonnay block is situated on a steep slope that faces directly west and into the winds that blow in off the Pacific Ocean, thus limiting yields and resulting in concentrated flavors. The yield in 2018 was just over 1 ton per acre.

The handpicked fruit was gently crushed before being pressed, cold settled overnight, then transferred to three barrels for fermentation. Wine was aged sur lees with no stirring for 14 months in once-used Damy French Oak Barrels. The 2018 John Sebastiano Vineyard Chardonnay displays a highly aromatic nose of white flower blossoms and salted nuts. The medium bodied wine is lean but still creamy, with clean flavors of lemon curd and flint.
