Harrison Clarke Vineyard Syrah 2017 Ballard Canyon—CA - Stringer Cellars

Reviews

93 - Wine Enthusiast
Stringer 2017 Harrison Clarke Vineyard Syrah (Ballard Canyon). Roasted coffee, molasses and cassis flavors make for a rich and satisfying nose on this bottling by a Napa-based winemaker. The palate is rich with caramelized strawberry, blueberry and milk-chocolate flavors, yet there is an angular acidity that cuts through the depth. —M.K.

Vineyard:

Harrison
Clarke vineyard is located in the Purisma Hills in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. The
vineyard lies within the boundaries of the newly designated Ballard Canyon AVA.
The sandy soils and cool microclimate make this an ideal location for growing Syrah
and other Rhône varietals.

Winemaking:

After destemming the hand-picked fruit was sorted and lightly crushed into an open top stainless fermentation tank.  The must was cold soaked for 5 days before inoculation.  The cap was punched down three times a day to maximize extraction during fermentation. The wine spent a total of 24 days on its skins before pressing.

Tasting Notes:

The 2017 Harrison Clarke Syrah pours a deep, nearly opaque purple with a varietal nose of dried herbs, smoked meat, violet, and sage.  A palate of black fruit, plum, and hints of cracked black pepper meld with soft velvety tannins.  A short decant or bottle age will be rewarded.
