STRINGER Napa Valley 20177% Petite Sirah. The Stringer trio is a sturdy lot to be sure, and this one shows plenty of extract and the slightly sinewy feel of a young Cabernet that wants cellaring, yet it is a bit more forthright in its expression of oak-enriched fruit, and its ongoing message of ripe currants and cherries is replete with suggestions of root beer, caramel and vanilla. It is a serious, eminently collectable effort that, when measured against many Cabernets costing two and three times as much, hits the mark for outstanding value.

The 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is blend of three Cabernet Vineyards that we sourced fruit from in 2017. 35% of the blend is Cabernet from the Pelissa Vineyard in Oakville, 42% is Cabernet from  Stagecoach and 16% is Cabernet from the Williamson Vineyards in Oak Noll. The remaining 7% is Petite Sirah from Calistoga.

Winemaking: The hand-picked fruit was destemmed, hand sorted and moved to a combination of a closed top stainless tanks and small new 60 gallon French oak barrels for fermentation. After a 5-day cold soak the musts were inoculated. The ferments were punched down 2-3 times per day and allowed to reach a maximum temperature of 92°F.  The wine stayed on its skins for an average of 21 days before being pressed at dryness.

Tasting Notes: The nose is complex and layered with notes of boysenberry, cocoa and toasted cedar. This wine is deep and brooding with hints of chocolate covered cherries, blackberries and currants. The fine-grain tannins coupled with masculine structure make this wine attractive in its youth but will only become more refined as it matures.
